Decision on next steps made

The Waihoro Spreydon-Cashmere-Heathcote Community Board made a decision on the next steps for Tuawera Cave Rock mast lights, on 28 August 2025.

The Board supported maintaining the current operating hours between dusk and 11pm. The Board also resolved that staff begin negotiations with the Deed Holder to:

  • Formalise an agreement to turn off the lights during the week leading up to and including Matariki.
  • Explore lighting options with a lower ecological impact.
  • Extend or reduce the lights to emphasise the form of the maritime mast.

What happens next?
Council staff will report back to the Waihoro Spreydon-Cashmere-Heathcote Community Board on the outcome of negotiations with the Deed Holder in six months.
