We're planning to upgrade Aorangi Road, between Ilam Road and Brookside Terrace. This includes the final section of the Nor'West Arc cycleway.

We consulted on this section of cycleway in 2021 and a design was approved by Council. We later found that Aorangi Road needs a full street renewal and wastewater renewals too, so the project was reassessed.

We're now planning to combine the three projects and deliver:

• a full street renewal
• cycleway
• wasterwater upgrades.

By combining these three projects into one, we can save money and minimise distruption to the street with a one-dig approach.

We have listened to feedback from the last round of consultation, and updated the designs. By combining the street renewal and cycleway together we are able to make more changes.

🦺The street renewal will include resealing the road and footpaths, so they are smooth, and rebuilding the kerbs.

🚗Last time we heard that residents wanted to keep as many on-street parking spaces as possible. We have redesigned the cycleway and approximately 20 parking spaces will be removed, with approximately 80 spaces retained. There will be parking spaces on both sides of the road.

🚴‍♀️The cycleway will be 2-way and 3m wide on the north side of Aorangi Road. Cyclists will be able to ride safely separated from the traffic in both directions.

🌳To make room for the cycleway and keep parking on both sides of the road, we are planning to narrow the berms. This means 25 trees will need to be removed. We will replace the trees removed two for one in the local area, in line with our Tree Policy. Eleven power poles will also need to be relocated.

The estimated construction cost for the project is $6.1 million. The chart below shows how the cost is split between the three elements of the project.

In 2021 we were planning to only build the cycleway and do the sewer and watermain renewals. Now, we are planning to do a full street renewal as well. The table below compares the scope of works between the 2021 design and current design.
