Consultation open

To provide more parking near the hospital, we’ve trialled a clearway on Hagley Avenue between St Asaph Street and Riccarton Avenue. The clearway operates between 7.30am and 7.30pm, enabling approximately 18 additional on-street carparks to be available in the evening. The lane is open to normal traffic flow during the day.

The trial was requested by Councillor Aaron Keown and was approved by the Finance and Performance Committee in December 2024, after Christchurch Hospital staff raised concerns about the lack of parking near the hospital.

Previously, we trialled a larger clearway on both Hagley Avenue and Riccarton Avenue that provided even more on-street carparks for hospital staff. However, this was reduced to the current limited clearway following feedback from Hato Hone St John and Christchurch Hospital, who told us that it made accessing the hospital difficult in an emergency.

The trial is ending soon

The trial is due to end in March 2026. Your Mayor and Councillors will decide whether to make this trial permanent, so we need to know what you think – what’s been working and what hasn’t.

Your feedback will help us to understand the impact of closing the kerbside lane at night and how this has affected people who use the road.
