Consultation closed

The Safer Speed Plan is no longer being considered due to an update to the Ministry of Transport's Setting of Speed Rule.

Consultation on our draft Safer Speed Plan has now closed. People were able to provide feedback from 18 September to 25 October 2023.

In October 2024, Ministry of Transport brought out a new Setting of Speed Limits Rule 2024, revoking and replacing the 2022 Rule that we were operating under.

This Rule means that all proposed changes in the draft Safer Speed Plan can no longer proceed to Council decision-making.

Why speed matters

No one expects a crash, but people make mistakes – including those who are careful and responsible drivers. These mistakes shouldn't cost anyone their lives.

Our plan | vision and principles

Our draft Speed Management Plan is guided by the following principles:

  • People make mistakes and that these mistakes shouldn't cost people their lives.
  • People should feel safe while using our streets.
  • People can make healthier travel choices that are better for themselves, the environment and our future.
  • Implement safe speeds that support land use changes as the population grows.
  • Make our city more healthy, livable and vibrant by creating streets where people feel comfortable using active modes of transport.
  • Work with our partners to enable behaviour change through education and enforcement.
