What we heard from the community and next steps

30 June 2025

Thanks to everyone who gave us feedback on this project

We heard from six organisations and 394 individuals. You can read everyone's feedback below.

What you told us

Most of you said you don't feel safe when travelling through both the Amyes and Awatea intersections with Springs Road.

Key concerns - Amyes/Springs intersection

  • It’s difficult/risky to right turn out of Amyes (165)
  • Visibility / the dip blocks visibility for left turn out of Amyes / vehicles pulling into intersection to see (113)
  • Amount of traffic / congestion (85)
  • The wait time causes risky driver behaviour (64)
  • Traffic stacking to turn into Awatea / Traffic travelling opposite direction using same median (55)
  • There is no safe place to cross / unsafe for pedestrians / pedestrians crossing at various places (27)
  • General comment: Dangerous / witnessed near miss/ accident (25)
  • Currently avoid the intersection / use safer options / avoid right turn (24)
  • Unsafe for cyclist / cars cross cycle lane (23)
  • Speed (18)
  • There is no problem at Amyes/Springs (7)

What happens next?

Staff briefed the Waipuna Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board on the community feedback on 26 June 2025. You can watch the video of this information session below.

There is currently not enough money on budget to implement the traffic light schemes that have been developed to date as these would require a lot of kerb and underground work. The Community Board would need to advocate for money to be allocated for this project as part of an Annual Plan or Long Term Plan process. In the meantime, the Board has asked staff to investigate whether there could be more cost effective options for traffic lights (e.g. without the kerb or underground changes). Staff will investigate this and report back to the Board. We'll update this page once we know when this will be.
