Cruise season 2023/24

3 November 2023

Key messages for the community:

This season will see changes to the way passengers are transported from the cruise berth to Christchurch City in order to reduce pressure on the public transport system and Lyttelton town centre. The transport operation will be scaled based on the size of the cruise ship.

Pre-booked tours departing from Lyttelton will still operate from Lyttelton however will now depart from Norwich Quay. Friends and family will also be able to pick up and drop off cruise guests from Norwich Quay.

There will be no services running to or from the Lyttelton Harbour Information Centre and tours are advised not to collect or drop off from there.

The majority of passengers not taking official tours will be shuttled directly from the cruise berth to the central city.

The public transport bus network has a more frequent and increased capacity service with the recent changes from Route 28 to Route 8. There is an additional school bus service being provided by Environment Canterbury for the duration of the season – more information can be found here Lyttelton Afternoon School Service | Metro Christchurch (metroinfo.co.nz)

We hope we’ve found balance which enables the city to benefit from cruise ship visitation. We appreciate your patience while we get this new model up and running.
