Last days for Lyttelton by-election nominations

12 December 2023

Those considering standing in the Lyttelton community Board by-election are encouraged to get their nominations in now.

Nominations for the vacancy to represent the Lyttelton subdivision on the Te Pātaka o Rākaihautū Banks Peninsula Community Board will close next week.

Christchurch City Council Electoral Officer Jo Daly is encouraging potential candidates to submit their nomination as soon as possible, to avoid any last-minute complications.

Jo Daly says the by-election is a great opportunity for someone to represent the Lyttelton community on the community board.

“If you have a strong commitment to Banks Peninsula and your community, and great relationship skills and time to commit, you should find out more about standing,” says Jo Daly.

Nominations opened on 24 November and close at noon on 22 December. There is one confirmed candidate for this by-election – Jillian Frater.

The by-election will be held on Saturday 17 February 2024, and will be conducted by postal vote.

The by-election was prompted by the resignation of community board member Reuben Davidson, who has been elected to Parliament.

Electoral legislation requires that if a vacancy arises on council or a community board more than twelve months before the next triennial election, an election must be held.

Nomination forms are available online at ccc.govt.nz/elections or from Te Hononga Christchurch City Council Civic Offices.

All candidates must be New Zealand citizens and enrolled on the Parliamentary residential electoral roll. Candidates need to be nominated for the position by two people who are enrolled on the Lyttelton community subdivision electoral roll.

If only one nomination is received, a voting process will not be held. If more than one nomination is received, voting will open on 26 January 2024 and close at noon on 17 February 2024. Progress results will be announced on 17 February 2024.

Completed nomination documents can emailed to elections@ccc.govt.nz or submitted to an electoral official at Civic Offices by 12noon on 22 December. Candidates are encouraged not to leave nominations to the last minute, as if anything isn’t correct there may not be time to address it before nominations close.

The electoral team can be contacted on 03 941 8581 or at elections@ccc.govt.nz.
