Mural by 'The Rain Whisperers' Shares Message About Climate Change

18 December 2023

‘The Rain Whisperers’ from Diamond Harbour School with assistance from Sian Carvell (Future Curious Limited), Jane Morgan (Coastal Hazards Team), and Reuben Woods (Watch this Space) have worked for the past year to understand Climate Change and the effect this will have on what they value in their community. ‘The Rain Whisperers’, a group of four Yrs. 6-7 students, work has resulted in a mural that provides a visual cue about climate change and exploring their relationship with the coast. The team identified the Diamond Harbour Wharf as a great place to paint it as it has high foot traffic, both local and beyond, ensuring their love for the area as well as climate change and adaptation messages are shared.

The inside left side wall of the shed represents the future that the pupils want and the right the future they want to avoid. The front of the shed is a tree representing the same concept. A message, inside the shelter, from the Rain Whisperers shares the message of the mural.

There is still hope through positive changes.

This is our chance to change global warming, to change our future.

Understand, you are not the person who should be afraid, you should be the person who is hope, who matters in this new step.

Think of this as the world’s biggest challenge that we must complete.

And accept that all animals matter as much as we do.

This is something you want to change without being forced to change.

Ngā mihi, the Rain Whisperers (Diamond Harbour School)

“After seeing our mural, we want a balance - not too hopeful that they think it isn’t a big deal BUT not so worried they feel they can’t do anything, and it is all too late anyway.”

– Rain Whisperers, Diamond Harbour School

Resene Paints has sponsored the mural by supplying the paint.
