Okains Bay Community Heralds in the Festive Season

20 December 2023

Okains Bay's 'Christmas at the Museum' kicked off on December 3 with a vibrant community event, where even the voting took an unexpected turn. Families and friends gathered at dusk for a festive community supper, exploring 14 Christmas tree displays spread across Okains Bay Museum's historic buildings and collection spaces.

Each attendee received a voting button to cast their choice for the best tree, many of which were creatively designed by members of the local community. The decision-making process, whether to support a friend's creation or choose a personal favorite, led to widespread indecision, resulting in multiple votes from enthusiastic participants.

The exhibition runs until 13 January 2023, ensuring that there's ample time to experience the festive magic.

The exhibition features interactive elements, such as Underground Overground Archaeology’s tree and Tiakitanga Pūtaiao Aotearoa’s (Biosecurity New Zealand) display, encouraging visitors to explore local history and learn about the importance of biosecurity.

Te Wānanga o Aotearoa’s student weavers showcase their artistic talents with "Te Whetū Kirihimete – Christmas Stars," two woven masterpieces inspired by their learning journey and friendships. Additionally, "Pacific Ebb & Flow," a captivating installation by Pioneer Crafters, a group formed through exercise classes, brings together beach-collected creations, reflecting windswept and sea-kissed inspirations.

From paracord and clay to shells and driftwood, the diversity of creative expressions mirrors the vibrant Okains Bay community. Each piece contributes to a tapestry of festive joy throughout the Museum, embodying the unique spirit of its creators. Christmas lights illuminate not only the displays but also the stories of our community.

'Christmas at the Museum' Community Supper was supported by CCC Summer with your Neighbours, Okains Bay Museum, Creative Communities Scheme (CCS), Showbiz Christchurch and The Light Site.
