Take a moment to recognise our community volunteers

29 February 2024

The Guardians of Akaroa Health was founded in 1991 and since 2017 Marie has been the driving force behind the sourcing and receiving of donated wool, coordination of a team of 'Underground knitters', and organising sales and deliveries of their beautiful creations.

To date the Guardians have raised a phenomenal $72,780, 100% of which is utilised by the Akaroa Health Centre for the benefit of the community.

The Guardians of Akaroa Health now have a cosy tiny shop, located opposite Potpourri where they have settled in well. They sell a great variety of items including cotton dish cloths, hats, gloves, baby clothes, aprons, playmats, lavender bags, preserves, poshed-up teddy bears, blankets and more.

The shop is open every Saturday from 10am to 3pm and other times by appointment. Volunteers who can contribute either time in the shop, or something to sell, are always welcome. Drop into the shop on a Saturday if you are interested in joining the team.

In addition to her amazing dedication to the Guardians of Akaroa Health, Marie has spent 2 terms on the Guardians Committee, 5 years on the Garden of Tane Reserve Committee and is currently still on the War Memorial Committee.

Do you know someone like Marie, who deserves to be recognised for their valuable service to our Banks Peninsula Community?

Community Service Awards are a chance to give well-deserved recognition to those who make our communities a better place. It’s an opportunity to thank volunteers for their dedication.

Nominations for our 2024 recipients open on Friday 1 March and close on Sunday 31 March.
