UC Athletics Club upgrade at Fendalton Park

The Canterbury University Athletics Club are seeking support from Council to improve and install new athletics facilities at Fendalton Park which includes building a new concrete long-jump pit with synthetic run-up, a 10 x 15m high-jump pad, and two small throwing circles and a cage.

This year the Club celebrated 125 years and due to the large number of members has more recently formed a junior club. The UC Junior Club now has over 120 members training during the summer athletics season from mid-October to early March. The Club have been operating on Fendalton Park since the 2021-22 athletics season and while it was always intended that the club return to their pre-earthquake Kirkwood Ave site, this is no longer feasible. The Club would like to install a concrete long-jump pit, a high-jump pad, and two small throwing circles and a cage. All of which would be at ground level, unobtrusive and should they need to be removed, the area can easily be remediated back to turf.

The temporary cages around the throwing circles will be in place during the athletics season from early October to mid-March and will be the responsibility of the Club to install and remove. The proposed positioning of the throwing circles is 10m from the dead ball line of the rugby field so will not affect the rugby field’s playing surface.

The new facilities would be available for use by the local community. Tūora Fendalton School and Medbury School have indicated that they would occasionally use the facilities.

The Waimāero Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood Community Board will consider all feedback before deciding whether to allow the Club to install these facilities in the park.
