The Hartley Ave pedestrian overbridge in Strowan was recently closed due to safety concerns relating to the condition of the bridge, in particular the handrails which were loose and proposed a risk of falling onto the tracks.

This bridge is vital for many local families, providing a safe route for students and parents to and from Waimairi School each day, as well as many local residents.

After negotiations with Council staff and other parties involved, it has been agreed that the cost of the repairs will be shared 50/50 between the Council and the Ministry of Education.

The work has now been completed and the bridge re-opened to the public on 23 August.

Work undertaken on the bridge included:

  • Full upgrade of the handrails on both sides of the main span. Handrail height increased from 1.05m (non-compliant) to 1.2m (compliant).
  • Full replacement of the transverse timber deck planks on the main span.
  • Full replacement of the timber kerbs on the main span.
  • Painting of above-deck timber components.
  • Full replacement of the anti-slip mesh on the main span.
  • Installation of yellow nosing on the edge of the steps.
  • Vegetation around the eastern pier has been cleared.
  • Tightening of any loose connections.

By working together, we are ensuring this link is maintained and improved, enhancing safety and connectivity for all.
