Next phase of works to start on Wairakei and Aorangi roads
29 January 2025

Stage 1, phase 2: Monday 3 February to June 2025
The key traffic impacts during phase 2 are:
Wairakei Road temporary one-way system
- The citybound lane on Wairakei Road will open to traffic on Monday 3 February (from early morning).
- The airport-bound lane will remain closed until June.
- Please continue to follow the detours currently in place.
Aorangi Road road closure
- The road closure on Aorangi Road, between Wairakei Road and Condell Avenue, will remain in place, with resident access only.
- There will be no access onto Wairakei Road from Aorangi Road at the southern side of the intersection, due to the airport-bound lane closure.
- Please continue to follow the detours currently in place.
What we'll be working on
Wairakei Road (Jennifer Street to Pitcairn Crescent)
- Wastewater upgrades: The underground work being continued with on Wairakei Road involves the installation of new, larger pipes that will help meet increasing demand from our growing city.
Wairakei Road / Aorangi Road intersection
- New signalised pedestrian and cycle crossing: To support the safe use of the new cycleway, a signalised crossing is being installed on Wairakei Road. This work will be completed during phase 2, but the crossing won't be commissioned for use until late 2025.
Aorangi Road (Wairakei Road to Condell Avenue)
During phase 2, work will ramp up on Aorangi Road, in the section between Wairakei Road and Condell Avenue, and be brought to completion.
- Wastewater renewals: The wastewater work involves the renewal of pipes originally installed in 1929. As they are nearly 100 years old, it is timely to replace these ahead of building the cycleway and completing a street renewal on Aorangi Road.
- Stormwater work: The stormwater pipe work also being done involves building a network underground to replace the open "deep dish" drains that run along each side of Aorangi Road. This change is required for the construction of the cycleway on the northbound lane, but will also be completed on the southbound lane as part of the street renewal.
- Street renewal works: Once the underground work has been completed, work will progress to renewing the road, footpaths, kerb and channel along this section of the road.
Businesses are open
Businesses are open as usual, and signposted customer parking will be available on both Wairakei and Aorangi roads.
Customers are encouraged to continue visiting during this time.
One-way citybound on Wairakei Road
The map below shows where the temporary one-way system will be in place, allowing citybound traffic to travel along Wairakei Road.
Signposted detours will remain in place for airport-bound traffic, however commuting motorists and cyclists are encouraged to take alternative routes that avoid the closure area.
Customer car parking
Customer parking will continue to be available on Aorangi Road at the southern side of the intersection. Signs are in place to direct motorists to this parking.
There will also be parking signage on Wairakei Road to indicate where customers can park.
Bus detour
During phase 2, the airport-bound bus route on the Metro Port-to-Port (#8) service will continue to include a detour via Greers Road, Condell Avenue and Blighs Road.
- The bus stops located on Wairakei Road between Greers Road and Blighs Road will remain closed on the airport-bound side of the road.
- The temporary bus stop that has been in place on Wairakei Road, west of Greers Road, will remain until June for the airport-bound route.
The citybound bus route will be back to normal from Monday 3 February, and the regular bus stops on Wairakei Road will be reopened for this direction of travel.
Work hours
The contractor, Isaac Construction, will be on site Monday to Saturday between the hours of 7am to 6pm. The lane and road closures will remain in place when the site is unattended.
