Next phase of works starting on Wairakei and Aorangi roads

25 May 2025

Work is starting on the third and final phase of Stage 1 work on this project. Stage 1 scope covers Aorangi Road, from Brookside Terrace to Condell Avenue, as well as a short section of Wairakei Road.

Stage 1, phase 3

The Stage 1, phase 3 programme involves work located on Aorangi Road (south), between Wairakei Road and Brookside Terrace and continued phase 2 work on Aorangi Road (north), between Wairakei Road and Condell Avenue. Work on phase 3 will begin on 26 May.

Phase 3 work scope:

  • Major wastewater and underground service upgrades along Aorangi Road.
  • Preparations for future kerb and channel, road and footpath renewals.
  • Cycleway construction.

This work overlaps some Stage 1, phase 2 works on Wairakei Road and Aorangi Road (north), which are still ongoing.

Stage 1, phase 2: Timing update

The transition back to two-way traffic on Wairakei Road was scheduled for mid-June but is now expected to take place by the end of July. This delay is due to a combination of wet weather, challenging ground conditions, and higher than usual groundwater levels.

These factors have required additional care during excavation and construction, particularly around critical work like manhole connections and trench backfilling. We’re sorry for any inconvenience caused by this delay.

Traffic impacts

As phase 3 work will overlap phase 2 work until the end of July, the below map shows the combined traffic impacts for this period, which are explained in more detail below.

26 May to end of July

Wairakei Road temporary one-way system:

  • The citybound lane on Wairakei Road is open to traffic travelling towards the city in a southeast direction.
  • The airport-bound lane, between Pitcairn Crescent and Jennifer Street, will remain closed until the end of July. There is no access through this section for traffic travelling northwest on Wairakei Road. Please continue to follow the detours currently in place. See the traffic detour map for phase 2 on the next tab.
  • The airport-bound bus route on the Metro Port-to-Port (#8) service will continue to include a detour via Greers Road, Condell Avenue and Blighs Road.

Aorangi Road (north) one-way system:

  • Aorangi Road (north) remains one-way, with entry from Condell Avenue only and left-turn exit only onto Wairakei Road. This temporary traffic management will extend until the end of August. Detours are in place.

Southwest approach to Wairakei intersection:

  • The existing closure at the southwest approach to the intersection of Wairakei Road and Aorangi Road will remain in place, extending south to just north of Colwyn Street, with access into the closure area maintained for residents and businesses only.

Workers will be on-site Monday to Saturday, 7am to 6pm, but the lane and road closures will be in place at all times.

This information and more can be found on the latest start work notice.

Businesses are open

Businesses are open as usual, and customers are encouraged to continue visiting during this time. Parking will continue being signposted, although the locations may adapt as work progresses. Please follow the signs.

Work hours

The contractor, Isaac Construction, will be on site Monday to Saturday between the hours of 7am to 6pm. The lane and road closures will remain in place when the site is unattended.

Night work may be required during phase 3. Prior to this happening, those who may be impacted will receive notification from the contractor.
