Progress on the Harewood Road rail crossing upgrade

19 September 2024

Two cranes were in action on Tuesday morning as Fulton Hogan, in collaboration with the Council and KiwiRail, completed a tandem lift for the Harewood Road rail crossing upgrade (see video above).

The rail is being replaced across the whole width of the crossing so the two cranes worked together to lift the 39-tonne new edilon concrete slab and train tracks into position.

No trains were running while the work was happening but with the track successfully installed, KiwiRail trains were back in action by Tuesday evening (see video below, with credit to: Fulton Hogan - contractor for the joint CCC/Kiwirail project).

The road closure remains in place until 29 September with a lot of work still to be done to get the crossing signalling system back up and running.

Thanks for your patience while this significant upgrade work is being completed.
