Temporary Papanui Parallel cycleway closure

26 June 2025

Essential water main upgrades are being completed on Grassmere Street and alongside a section of the Papanui Parallel cycleway, between Grants Road and Rutland Street.

This work will allow the replacement of pipes at the end of their service life, as well as add new pipes to future-proof water connections in this area.

To complete this work safely, a section of the Puari ki Papanui - Papanui Parallel cycleway needs to be closed for four weeks, starting from Wednesday 2 July 2025.

Cyclists and pedestrians are asked to please follow the signposted detour, which uses Grants Road, Rayburn Avenue, Paparoa Street and Tomes Road. Please see a map of the detour below.

The cycleway will reopen for regular use in early August, and you'll see the rest of the work being completed until early September 2025.

Work impacts

This work will be be split up into three zones, and work will start on zone two:

  • Zone one: Mid-July to late August 2025
  • Zone two: Wednesday 2 July to early August 2025 (cycleway section closed)
  • Zone three: Mid-July to late August 2025

It is acknowledged that this cycleway is very well-used with apologises for any inconvenience this temporary section closure causes.

Ngā mihi nui, thanks for your patience and understanding while this essential work is completed.
