Two-way traffic returns to Wairakei Road

1 August 2025

Two-way traffic is being reinstated on Wairakei Road, with the Project Team thanking all those affected for their patience as work progressed on wastewater upgrades at the intersection of Wairakei and Aorangi roads, as well as construction on the Nor’West Arc Cycleway which will extend along Aorangi Road.

Work will now solely focus on Aorangi Road, north and south of the intersection, where a street renewal is being completed alongside the cycle works.

Project updates

There are some changes to information previously communicated, and a new Update - Start Works Notice has been issued to reflect this.

The updates are summarised below:

When two-way traffic returns to Wairakei Road on 31 July, no other traffic management changes will take immediate effect.

  • This means the road closure on Aorangi Road (south), between Wairakei Road and Brookside Terrace, will briefly remain in place.

From early August, the one-way system on Aorangi Road (south) will be installed.

  • Access from Wairakei Road onto Aorangi Road (south) will be one-way southbound to Bateman Avenue. This will be in place until December.
  • The east and west Brookside Avenue approaches onto Aorangi Road will be temporarily closed.

The one-way system on Aorangi Road (north) will now remain in place until the end of October.

  • North of the Wairakei/Aorangi intersection, Aorangi Road remains one-way southbound from Condell Avenue, with a left-only exit onto Wairakei Road. The end date has moved from end of August to end of October.
  • There is no entry/exit at Christian Street and Wallace Street where they intersect Aorangi Road (north).

The end date for this stage of works (Stage 1) has been extended from October to December 2025.

More information about traffic management to support access to properties in the work area has been provided to affected residents and businesses.
