From Diwali to a duck race - check out what's on in Christchurch this weekend.

Indian Social & Cultural Club Diwali 2024

After the weather unfortunately took a turn last Saturday, the Indian Social and Cultural Club Diwali was moved to this weekend! Immerse yourself in the vibrant Indian culture at Diwali with music and dance performances, food stalls, fireworks and entertainment including dazzling lights and thrilling rides.

The 2024 Diwali event will be held from 2 – 9.30pm Saturday in North Hagley Park. Entry is free.

Diwali at Riverside Market

Let the Diwali celebrations continue and head down to Riverside Market from 5 – 9pm Saturday for henna designs, traditional sari try-ons, performances and candle lighting at the river at dusk. Experience the magic of Diwali through live performances including traditional dances and music.

Diwali at Riverside Market is brought to you in association with Bhartiya Samaj Canterbury and Canterbury Indian Women Group.

The 2024 MoreFM Great Canterbury Duck Race

Join the quacking fun and get your ducks in a row at More FM’s Great Canterbury Duck Race on Sunday. Last year, the event raised over $30,000 to support the vital work Life Education does empowering children across Canterbury.

Watch the Businesses of Canterbury Duck Race and see which highly decorated duck wins the race and vote on the best dressed duck. Then enter and watch the community race to see who wins! Entry is $10, the event will be on from midday to 3pm Sunday at the Bridge of Remembrance.

Día de Muertos / Day of the Dead at Christchurch City Libraries

This week there have been a range of events across the Christchurch City Libraries network to celebrate Día de Muertos / Day of the Dead – check out what’s on this weekend!

Join for a variety of activities at Ōrauwhata: Bishopdale Library and Community Centre’s After School Activity Zone from 3.30 – 4.30pm Friday. Celebrate at Tūranga on Saturday with Mexican dance and songs performed by community groups from 1 – 2pm and a drop in session of Family Makerspace with crafts and creations from 2.30 – 3.30pm.

Create a colourful, festive hanging at Papanui Library between 10am – 3pm Sunday at the Paper craft session, and join us for a chocolate skull making workshop at South Library from 1.30 – 3pm Sunday. View all the events on the Christchurch City Libraries website.

Spring Gala at Phillipstown

Celebrate spring in style at the Phillipstown Gala on Saturday. There will be a diverse line up of music, food options, coffee, free bouncy castles and face painting and a market. Plus family fun games, a chance to learn circus skills, information booths and a community garden.

Head down to the Phillipstown Community Hub at 39 Nursery Road from 11am – 3pm Saturday.
