Update following Community Board information session on 26/02/2026

24 March 2026

On 26 February 2026, staff updated the Waihoro Spreydon-Cashmere-Heathcote Community Board on the outcome of negotiations with the Deed Holder, undertaken since the Board considered this matter at its meeting on 28 August 2025.

The update at the Board’s Information Session/Workshop covered the negotiations, which covered all the points from the Board’s resolutions made at its meeting on 28 August 2025:

  • Turn the lights off during the week prior to and including the date of the Matariki public holiday each year.
    • This has been agreed with the Deed Holder and will continue as currently practiced.
  • Explore ecologically friendly types of lights.
    • The mast lighting has been reviewed against Dark Sky International’s Five Principles for Responsible Outdoor Lighting, demonstrating several areas of alignment. To fully align with those principles, the lighting would require full replacement.
  • Extend or reduce the lights to emphasise the form of the maritime mast.
    • Staff demonstrated to the Board what different configurations would look like. The Deed Holder has lights available and is willing to supply these for installation along the horizontal bar but has no funding to carry out the work.

Based on this update, the Board had the opportunity to ask questions of staff. As a result of this latest update, there are no immediate actions to be taken. If circumstances change, the Board may revisit this in the future.
