The Ōtākaro Avon River Corridor (OARC) once held more than 5,000 homes with an extensive road network. Over time, as these roads have no longer been required, they have been closed to the public. This is to both deter anti-social behavior and to allow for the naturalisation of the corridor.

We are currently looking at officially stopping roads that fall into the following three categories.

Roads already closed to vehicles

Three sections of road currently closed to all vehicles will be formally stopped (see map below for location details) as there are no longer any residents requiring access. We are not seeking feedback on these roads.

Kingsford Street from Broomfield Terrace to Tasman Place

Roads open to vehicles, no residents

There are several sections of roads that have been kept open to vehicles for access to homes or community assets. As the area has changed over time it is no longer necessary to keep some of these roads open (see map below for location details).

Kingsford Street and Broomfield Terrace

We propose stopping the section of Kingsford Street still open to traffic, and Broomfield Terrace from the North Burwood Park playground car park to New Brighton Road. This is due to anti-social behaviour and illegal dumping. The current parking for the Burwood Park playground would be accessed from the north and controlled by a gate.

Brooker Avenue and Stour Drive

Brooker Avenue, from Istana Place to New Brighton Road was signalled for closure in the OARC Regeneration Plan. This has not yet occurred but is supported by the Burwood East Residents Association to reduce antisocial behaviour including dumping and vandalism. Gates would allow daytime access to Donnell Sports Park and playground.

For similar reasons to Brooker Avenue, we would also stop Stour Drive from Brooker Avenue to Vivian Street.

Hulverstone Drive intersection with Chardale Street

Due to the re-configuration of a residential driveway, Hulverstone Drive can now be stopped completely, including approximately 30 metres of Chardale Street.

Roads open to vehicles, limited residents

We're considering closing a section of Cheam Street due to anti-social behaviour and dumping. Both options retain access for Sutton Place residents (see map below for details).

Cheam Street north

Close Cheam Street from 18 Cheam Street to Sutton Place. Sutton Place residents would access via Burchfield Avenue and Cheam Street south.

Cheam Street south

Close Cheam Street from Sutton Place to Birchfield Avenue and Birchfield Avenue from Ferner Street to Moyna Avenue. Sutton Place residents would access via Mundys Road and Cheam Street north.
