Raranga Te Rawhiti Weaving the East Project

Raranga Te Rawhiti Weaving the East Project

INTRODUCTION:

Following the Wastewater Treatment Plant Fire Response and Recovery Review, one of the recommendations was for Council to:

  • Prioritise strengthening and sustaining effective and respectful relationships with the affected communities, so as to regain their trust and confidence.

The Christchurch City Council is committed to fostering stronger connections and improving its relationship with Eastern Suburb communities.

Key objectives include identifying practical actions for community development, improving the Councils disaster response, and increasing awareness of Council decision making processes and resources.

By collaborating with local community groups and encouraging active participation in decision-making, the Council aims to strengthen social cohesion and contribute to the overall well-being of the Eastern Suburbs.

PROJECT IS GUIDED BY:

  • Te Haumako Te Whitingia Strengthening Communities Together Strategy
  • Community Board Priorities
  • The Independent Review of the Council's response to the Wastewater Treatment Plant fire.

The Community Board Priorities ensure that the project aligns with the specific needs and aspirations of the Eastern Suburbs. The insights from the Independent Review will guide the development of effective disaster response strategies, ensuring that past lessons are incorporated to enhance community and Council preparedness. Together, these will help shape a responsive and successful project.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES:

  • Engage with community groups to foster a collaborative relationship with Council, improving mutual understanding and trust.
  • Engage with community members to identify practical actions that Council can take to improve community infrastructure and development.
  • Collaborate with communities to develop effective disaster response strategies, enhancing Council and community preparedness.
  • Engage with community groups to increase awareness and use of Council resources, enhancing their capacity to address community needs.
  • Increase community members awareness of Councils processes to facilitate more active participation in local decision-making.
  • Achieve these objectives to enable Council to contribute to social cohesion and well-being in the eastern suburbs by fostering community development and collaboration.
