Board Celebrates Garden Award Recipients

The Community Board celebrated the 2024 recipients of the Edible and Sustainable Garden Awards and the Community Pride Garden Awards at the event they hosted on 18 July 2024 at the Opawa Community Church.

The Edible and Sustainable Garden Awards are run in partnership with the Canterbury Horticultural Society (CHS) to encourage and celebrate all types of edible gardens.

Community Pride Garden Awards is a Council initiative started in 1991 and is a joint venture with the Christchurch Beautifying Association (CBA) since 1997. This award acknowledges local residents that contribute to maintaining the image of Christchurch as a Garden City by beautifying their streets and gardens.

Guest speakers Gavin Treadgold, CHS Board Member, and Ron Andrew, CBA Senior Judge, spoke to the gathering before the special awards were presented.

Edible and Sustainable Garden Special awards were presented to:

  • Linda Cattanach for Beginner gardener
  • Sharon Dawe for Tomatoes
  • Anna Heinen for Sustainability features and Organic garden
  • Jean Brossard for Fruit and berries
  • Cathy Nieuwenhuijsen for Yield

Community Pride Garden Special awards were presented to:

  • Dave and Anne Chambers for 10 years
  • Bronwyn Stowe for 10 years
  • Keith Delahunt for 20 years
  • Noreen Torkington for 30 years
