About the Community Board

The Waihoro Spreydon-Cashmere-Heathcote Community Board hold regular meetings that you’re welcome to attend. Anyone can ask to speak to the board about a local issue, activity or project.

The Community Board's main roles are to:

  • Represent and act as an advocate for the interests of our community.
  • Consider and report on all matters referred to us by the council, or any matter of interest to the board.
  • Maintain an overview of services provided by the council within the community.
  • Communicate with community organisations and special interest groups within the community.
Community Board Meetings - Update

The Community Board, until the end of last year, had been holding its regular meetings and information sessions in the Beckenham Boardroom at South Library and Service Centre, 66 Colombo Street. But with the imminent demolition and rebuild of the facility, the Community Board will have its regular meetings at the Linwood Boardroom, for the next two years.

Members of the public are welcome to attend the meetings and information sessions; the Linwood Boardroom is located by the carpark at Gate B, 180 Smith Street, Linwood. The upcoming meetings are listed below on this webpage.

Community funding

The Community Board offers grants to assist local groups to undertake small community projects.

We have three funds open year-round for community to apply to, which are Discretionary Response Fund, Youth Development Fund and Off the Ground Fund.

The 2025 Strengthening Communities Funding round opens on 1 May and closes at noon on 30 May 2025. This fund supports community-focused organisations whose projects contribute to the strengthening of community wellbeing in the Christchurch city area. Successful applicants of Strengthening Communities Fund will be paid after 1 September 2025.

Civic service to mark quake anniversary

The fourteenth anniversary of the 22 February 2011 earthquakes will be marked with a public civic memorial service.

The ceremony will take place at Oi Manawa Canterbury Earthquake National Memorial on the banks of the Ōtākaro Avon River, at the corner of Cambridge Terrace and Montreal Street on Saturday.

A minute of silence will be held at 12.51pm, and the names of the 185 people who lost their lives in the earthquake will be read aloud with the HMNZS Canterbury bell tolled with each name.

“Mayor Phil Mauger will lay a wreath at the Memorial Wall on behalf of the people of Christchurch, and the wider community will be invited to lay floral tributes after the ceremony concludes around 1.15pm,” says Christchurch City Council Manager Office of the Mayor and Civic Services Duncan Sandeman.

“We welcome all who wish to attend to join as a community and reflect on the impact the destructive earthquakes have had on our city, and to remember those lives that were lost.”
