Current News: Update on Main Road to Sumner

5 February 2026

Geotech has assessed Clifton Hill after a blocked wastewater pipe caused rocks to fall from the hillside and found there is low risk of additional falls.

One lane of Main Road has been reopened so you’re able to get in and out of Sumner, but please be aware there will be significant delays in both directions.

Traffic is being managed via traffic lights that will be manually controlled during peak times to allow for traffic flow in and out of Christchurch.

This traffic system is likely to be in place for several days while the area dries out.

The Coastal Pathway remains open as usual. Clifton Terrace is also operating on one lane and may need to be closed at times for repair works.

Thanks so much for your patience and take care if you’re travelling through the area.
