Bill Hammond Reserve is a new reserve with relatively low tree cover and minimal play equipment so we're planning to make some improvements. Click on the tabs below to see what we're proposing.
Play space renewal
The Belfast Residents' Association approached us to install some more play equipment in Bill Hammond Reserve to make it fun for everyone in the area. With the number of new families moving in to the area, we agree with the residents' association that more equipment would be a great improvement.
Since this project is based off a community request, we don't have a high budget to install new equipment. We currently have approximately $50,000 for play equipment. We're installing:
- A two-bay swing set (with two standard swings and two toddler swings)
- A carousel
- A bicycle springer
- A junior portable goal (4m x 2m)
We'll retain the climbing structure to create three distinct play areas.
Tree planting plan
We’ve started a major tree planting program (the Urban Forest Plan) across Ōtautahi Christchurch to grow our urban canopy.
Trees provide space for us to relax and play, a home for birdlife, insects and other wildlife, enhancement of our environment, a source of food to nourish and heal us, and improve our wellbeing. Trees are also an effective way to reduce the effects of climate change. They provide shade as our summers get hotter, help absorb more stormwater, soak up carbon dioxide and filter the air.
We’ll carefully select the right tree in the right location to complement the local environment to avoid things like excessive shade, debris, damage to property or infrastructure.
