The Burwood Road / Mairehau Road intersection is a key route for people traveling to and from Burwood Hospital, Parklands, Marshlands and New Brighton. Approximately 8000 vehicles pass through every day. It’s also a key bus corridor for route 7 (which is a high frequency route) and route 135.

In the last 10 years, there have been 10 crashes in and near the intersection, including one serious crash involving a cyclist and five minor crashes involving cars. Burwood Hospital, the Spinal Cord Trust and the Champion Centre neighbour the intersection, meaning vulnerable users regularly walk through the intersection for light exercise and rehabilitation.

We want everyone to get where they’re going safely, regardless of how they’re travelling, so we’re considering two options to improve safety at this intersection.

Roundabout upgrades

  • Installs speed humps on all four approaches to the roundabout,
  • Increases size of the current pedestrian refuge islands,
  • Paints new yellow no-parking lines and sharrow markings.
These changes will slow people down as they approach the intersection, giving everyone more time to react. This option doesn’t require additional funding and could be constructed within a year.

Signalised intersection

  • Removes the roundabout,
  • Installs traffic lights with signalised crossings,
  • Paints new yellow no-parking lines, lane markings and cycle hook turns.
These changes create a clear right of way and the addition of ‘green man’ crossings provides a crossing time for pedestrians. However, travel times will often increase as vehicles will have to wait longer at the lights. Drivers may try to run the yellow or red lights at the new signals, increasing the risk of a collision. This option will require additional funding, which means it could take up to three years to construct.

New pedestrian refuge island

Regardless of which option is chosen, we’re proposing a new pedestrian refuge island on Burwood Road, outside the entrance to Burwood Hospital, with speed humps on the approaches. This is to provide a safe crossing for people walking to and from the hospital.
