Christchurch Yacht Club - updated plans

9 April 2025

Thank you to everyone who submitted on the Christchurch Yacht Club's proposed redevelopment of their club facilities.

The Club revised its proposed building plans in response to some of the concerns raised by submitters during consultation. The updated plans include:

  • Reduction in the length of the building fronting the road boundary from 23m to 13.7m long (40 % reduction) to increase view shafts.
  • Change in building design from a low-profile rock wall facade to a ‘boat shed’ type facade to address concerns about the character of the buildings
  • Increase in sight lines for the temporary/event gateway onto the coastal pathway
  • Introduction of a fence to the eastern portion of their exclusive lease area (1.4m high open/pool style fence) as consulted on between September and October 2023. The Club will provide a gate for public access on the car park side of the facility. However, they will reserve the right to restrict access during club days, or if there is good reason to do so (i.e., increased vandalism, H&S issues or inappropriate behavior). Note - the club has an exclusive lease in perpetuity and have the right to prohibit access.

We heard through feedback that environmental impacts are a key concern. Should the proposal be approved by the Community Board, these matters will be assessed in detail through the resource consent process managed by Environment Canterbury.

We intend to brief the Waihoro Spreydon-Cashmere-Heathcote Community Board on the Club’s updated proposal and submission feedback by late May 2025. Following this, we will provide you with an update on next steps, including details of a decision meeting.

If you wish to provide further feedback, or amend / withdraw your feedback based on the updated plans, please get in touch by emailing letstalk@ccc.govt.nz by 12 May 2025.
