Corsair Bay and Cass Bay are popular summer beaches with well-loved play spaces. The playground gear has had an awesome run, but it's time for something fresh. To keep the fun going safely, we're bringing in modern play equipment that’s just as exciting—so you can keep climbing, exploring, and playing for years to come.
Earlier this year, we engaged local tamariki and rangatahi to help us with new designs. We also worked with the local hapū, Ngāti Wheke, to ensure the history of Te Rāpaki-o-Te Rakiwhakaputa is celebrated through new wooden carvings, Te Ao Māori inspired play equipment and nature play, and coloured surfaces.Corsair Bay
Renewals for Corsair Bay
The Corsair Bay play space is designed for toddlers through to high-school aged children, offering increasing levels of risk and challenge as you move up the hill. It uses the natural slope around the play space to create exciting new ways to play, like slides with different heights and climbing equipment with hand holds and ropes.
The space will be well equipped to handle the high summer demand by doubling the number of swings, tripling the number of slides and providing more areas for caregivers and kids to spend time together.
A red theme is used to pay respect to the original Te Reo Māori name, used by the Ngāi Tahu chief Te Rakiwhakaputa, Motu-kauati-iti— meaning “place of small fire making”. The nature play around the main play space will feature fun and interactive art inspired by native birds such as Pīwakawaka, Pūkeko, and Kāhu feet to encourage kids to explore.
We're improving access to the play space with new footpaths and a new entrance from the car park. This will require the removal of two car parks, but an accessible car park will be added. There will also be a low fence around the play space to improve safety.
The proposed play space features:

Renewals for Cass Bay
The Cass Bay play space is designed for preschool and primary school aged kids, focusing on accessibility and inclusive play. The design uses the slope to the north of the current play space to create exciting new ways to play with a climbing net and a new slide.
We're improving access to the play space through new footpaths. Currently, the stairs from the Bayview Place car park can be blocked by cars. To make the stairs more accessible, the car park in front of the stairs will be removed.
There will be a relaxing space for families with new shade umbrellas and picnic tables.
As with Corsair Bay, the red theme pays respect to the Te Reo Māori name Motu-kauati-rahi – “great fire-making tree grove”.
The proposed play space features:
- A waka inspired climbing structure – with slides, fire-man poles and imaginative play,
- A 2m high stainless-steel slide with sensory panels on the landing,
- A climbing net with hand holds and ropes,
- A basket swing,
- A small spinner, moved from the Corsair Bay play space,
- Nature play (hopping logs, ‘find-the-footprint’ tiles and artwork) throughout the grass and bushes.
