Consultation closed
Consultation on Glandovey Road and Idris Road safety improvements has now closed. People were able to provide feedback from 2 August to 5 September 2023.
During this time, we heard from 120 individuals and groups. You can read their feedback and the staff recommendation as part of the agenda for the Waimāero Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood Community Board meeting, by clicking on the link in the box above.
The Waimāero Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood Community Board met on 12 August and decided to table the report, requesting additional options from staff.
The Glandovey, Idris, Straven Residents Association (GISA) highlighted safety concerns to do with people using active transport (walking, cycling and scootering) to get around the area.
Since then, we have been working on a plan to increase safety for everyone.
Glandovey Road
On Glandovey Road we're planning:
- Three pedestrian refuge islands to make crossing the road safer.
- Speed cushions on the approaches to the refuge islands to slow down vehicles. Cars will have to slow down to ride over these, while heavy vehicles are wide enough to straddle them - minimising vibration and noise.
- Painted cycle lanes on both sides of the road.
- A loss of 98 car parks, with 34 retained, to:
- Clear space for the new cycle lanes.
- Provide space at the new crossing points and maintain safe sight lines between drivers and pedestrians that use the crossings.
- Provide safe sight lines at the 'Stop' intersections at Bryndwr Road and Garreg Road.
Note: Parking occupancy surveys on these roads show that, on average, enough on-street parks will remain to support current use.
- Safety improvements to the Fendalton/Glandovey intersection:
- Relocation of the pedestrian crossing point to a few metres north on Glandovey Road, away from the corner to increase visibility.
- A double-height kerb to prevent trucks from mounting the footpath.
- Additional heavy vehicle deterrent signage.
- Enhanced landscaping including two new trees on Fendalton Road and dwarf agapanthus around the pedestrian refuge crossings.
- A speed limit reduction to 40km/h on Glandovey Road and 30km/h on side roads including Thornycroft Street, Bryndwr Road, Pentlow Place, Garreg Road, and Plynlimon Road (this was approved as part of Safe Speed Neighbourhoods)
- Maintenance at some sections to improve the road surface (we are not seeking feedback on this aspect of the plan).
Idris Road
On Idris Road we're planning:
- Two pedestrian refuge islands to make crossing the road safer.
- Painted cycle lanes on both sides of the road.
- A loss of 46 car parks, with 46 retained, to:
- Clear space for the new cycle lanes.
- Provide clear entry and exit points at the new crossing points, including achieving safe sight lines between drivers and pedestrians using the crossings.
- Improve sight lines at the 'Stop' intersections at Wroxton Terrace and Stratford Street
- Accommodate bus stops
Note: Parking occupancy surveys on this road show that, on average, enough on-street parks will remain to support current use.
- Introduction 'Stop' signage at Wroxton Terrace and Stratford Streets as the sight lines are less than what are safe for 'Give Way's.
- Enhanced landscaping including dwarf agapanthus around the pedestrian refuge crossings.
- Maintenance at some sections to improve the road surface (we are not seeking feedback on this aspect of the plan).
Safe speed cushions
Safe speed cushions are designed to slow most vehicles down. At 1.8 metres wide within a 3.2m traffic lane, most vehicles need to slow down to travel over them. Heavy vehicles including buses, fire engines and ambulances are wide enough to straddle them, which helps reduce noise and vibrations. Their placement in the road also means people can’t drive around them.
Safe speed cushions installed on the approaches to pedestrian refuge islands makes it safer for people crossing the road because traffic is going slower.
When everyone travels a bit slower, people feel safer walking, scooting or biking to get around.
