Consultation open
We’ve heard from the community that it’s hard to cross Hoon Hay Road near the Lewis Street intersection and a safe pedestrian crossing is needed. The Hoon Hay Community Association made a deputation to the Community Board on the matter in 2023.
We want everyone to be able to safely walk, scooter, drive, cycle or bus where they want to go. We have assessed the pedestrian crossing demand and have found there is demand for a crossing point on both sides of the Lewis Street intersection. We have developed 3 options to choose from and want to hear what you think.
No stopping lines
All options will result in some parking loss. We need to install no stopping lines near the pedestrian crossing points to make sure that pedestrians and drivers can see one another. We’ll also install no stopping lines near the existing bus stop on Hoon Hay Road to make sure buses can get in and out of the stops safely.
We want to know which option you prefer
We don’t have a big enough budget to do everything so we are only able to consider minor changes to the plans. All feedback will be presented to the Waihoro Spreydon-Cashmere-Heathcote Community Board for a decision.
Option 1
Option one includes:
- Installing a pedestrian island north of the Lewis Street intersection, near 94 Hoon Hay Road
- Painting flush median marking
- Installing no stopping lines near pedestrian crossing points and bus stops. This will result in approximately 14 parking spaces being removed
- Installing a stop sign on Lewis Street
- Installing 10 minute parking outside the shops on Lewis Street
- Slightly shifting the bus stop location on Hoon Hay Road to allow for separation between bus stop and the pedestrian crossing
Option 2
Option two includes:
- Installing a pedestrian island south of the Lewis Street intersection, near 102 Hoon Hay Road
- Painting flush median marking
- Installing no stopping lines near pedestrian crossing points and bus stops. This will result in approximately 20 parking spaces being removed
- Installing a stop sign on Lewis Street
- Installing a give way sign on Smartlea Street
- Installing 10 minute parking outside the shops on Lewis Street
Option 3
Option three includes:
- Installing a pedestrian island on both sides of the Lewis Street intersection, outside both 94 and 102 Hoon Hay Road
- Painting flush median marking
- Installing no stopping lines near pedestrian crossing points and bus stops. This will result in approximately 24 parking spaces being removed
- Installing a stop sign on Lewis Street
- Installing a give way sign on Smartlea Street
- Installing 10 minute parking outside the shops on Lewis Street
- Slightly shifting the bus stop location on Hoon Hay Road to allow for separation between the bus stop and pedestrian crossing.
