Consultation open
Christchurch City BMX Club have been based at Kyle Park, Hornby for over 20 years. Their lease has expired and they are applying for a new one.
The lease is for roughly the same area as their previous lease, but they are proposing a number of additions to the BMX track that aim to increase safety, bring the track to a national level, and reduce wastage of the limestone that covers the track. Their use of the lease area will not change.
The additional aspects of the lease application are:
- two storage containers and dome bunker to be recognised in the lease
- building of a start hill cover
- replacement of the start gate
- installation of a limestone bunker at the Western end of the BMX track
- the addition of 1.2m safety fencing around some parts of the track.

The club has placed a dome bunker and two 20 foot shipping containers beside the track. They are seeking to formalise this in the lease.
- The dome bunker has been on the site since the early 2000s is used to record results on race days and for club storage
- One shipping container is used as a club shop facility, open during race meetings
- The second container is used to store track maintenance equipment.
The club are proposing to build a cover over the start hill. This would bring the track up to a national competition standard.
The cover would provide somewhere for riders and coaches to stay when they are racing in bad weather.
The proposed cover would be made from steel, roughly 10m wide, 12-14m long and 2.4-3m high.
The start gate holds riders in place at the top of the track and drops when the race begins.
The current start gate is around 20 years old. The club are seeking to replace the gate. The new gate will allow the track to hold national and Oceania championships.
The club use around 10 tonnes of limestone each year. Limestone is applied to the track surface to ensure it's durable and provides a smooth ride.
The club is proposing to build a concrete bunker around their limestone storage space. A bunker would reduce wastage of limestone.
The BMX track has wooden fencing around some parts of the track. The club are proposing to put a 1.2m fence around the outside of more of the track.
The club propose that the fencing will prevent vandalism, whilst maintaining public access to the BMX track as it would not be fully enclosed. The proposed fencing is wooden post and rail fencing to match the existing one.
Tell us what you think
There will be a separate consultation in 2026 of a proposal for a pump track at Kyle Park. We will contact all of those who submit in this proposal to provide the opportunity to give feedback on that next year.
