AF8 Public Science Talks – Ōtautahi 2025

In support of the national science programme, Alpine Fault Magnitude 8 (AF8), the AF8 Roadshow 2025 is returning to Ōtautahi Christchurch this May.

While we can’t predict when earthquakes will occur, scientific research indicates there is a 75% probability of an Alpine Fault earthquake occurring in the next 50 years, and that there is a 4 out of 5 chance that it will be a magnitude 8+ event.

There will be three public talks across the city: Christchurch West, Christchurch Central, and Christchurch East.

  • West: Given the diverse demographics and varying levels of understanding of the Alpine Fault 8 earthquake risk, we have secured Te Hāpua Mohoao Hall in the west, which can accommodate up to 300 attendees.
  • Central: For the central city, we’d like to foster inclusivity by hosting the event at the Multicultural Recreation and Community Centre.
  • East: Recognising the vulnerabilities that our eastern suburbs face in emergencies, we have selected a more intimate venue this year to encourage community discussion and direct engagement with the presenter(s). We are incredibly grateful to the New Brighton South Surf Club for generously providing this space free of charge.
