The Upper Riccarton War Memorial Library was built in 1919 to commemorate local residents who served in World War 1. The library was demolished earlier this year due to earthquake risks.

The Waipuna Community Board has agreed to develop the space at 327 Riccarton Road into a small memorial park. The proposed park will acknowledge the library's legacy by maintaining aspects of the old library, including the front facade of the building, signage, foundation stone and book return holder. It will also feature interpretation and memorial (soldiers names) paneling, an uplifting mural, seating areas and plants.
