Thanks to everyone who submitted feedback on this project

Early engagement with residents and businesses started in May 2024 and their feedback helped us shape the draft plan that went for consultation in July 2025.

We received a total of 72 submissions about the safety improvements for Somerfield St and Strickland St, from 66 individuals and the following organisations/businesses:

  • Moon Under Water
  • Tillmans Fine Furniture
  • Somerfield Residents Association
  • Spokes Canterbury
  • Over the rainbow group
  • Canterbury/West Coast Automobile Association

What you told us

Overall, the majority of submitters supported (44, 61%), or somewhat supported the plan (24, 34%). Three submitters did not support the plan, and one said they weren’t sure or didn’t know.

Key things submitters liked about the plan:

  • General support for safety improvements (27)
  • Cycling improvements (13)
  • Cycle parking (9)
  • Cycle median (9)
  • Median on Somerfield St (9)
  • Speed bumps (7)
  • No stopping restrictions on Strickland Street near 1/141 Somerfield Street (4)

Key things submitters didn’t like about the plan:

  • Speed bumps (8) - although one submitter said they would be ok with a raised platform instead
  • Cycle median/lane - would prefer cyclists take the lane (3)
  • Overall unnecessary/waste of money (2)
