Consultation open

The Somerfield Street and Strickland Street intersection is a busy area used by many vehicles, walkers and cyclists. We want everyone to get where they’re going safely, regardless of how they’re travelling so we’re proposing safety improvements around this intersection.

In May 2024, we asked for community feedback on transport issues in this area. Visibility, vehicle speed, and safety for people walking and biking were key things the community wanted to see addressed.

Your feedback has helped us shape the plan for the Strickland Street and Somerfield Street intersection.

We're proposing to:
  • Add tactile pavers and speed humps to the crossing on Somerfield Street, at the Strickland Street intersection.
  • Add a small section of cycle lane with a narrow median on Strickland Street from the Colombo Street intersection to the Somerfield Street intersection. This will slow left turning vehicles from Colombo Street into Somerfield Street and prevent vehicles from cutting into the cycle lane.
  • Extend the kerb build out in front of Moon Under Water to slow cars around the left hand turns.
  • Reconfigure the Moon Under Water’s lease area for outdoor dining and fencing to improve pedestrian visibility.
  • Add green paint to the existing cycle lanes to identify conflict points.
  • Add a narrow central median island on Strickland Street to prevent cars turning too early when turning right from Strickland Street into Somerfield Street.
  • Add no stopping restrictions (approx. 1.5 car lengths) outside 1/141 to improve visibility.
  • Add additional landscaping and cycle stands.
