Local students’ art spins creativity into motion!

8 December 2025

Thank you to everyone who entered the Wycola Skate Park Hamster Wheel Art Competition! We were thrilled to receive 90 incredible, creative designs from local students aged 5–15, along with nearly 300 votes for a favourite design at Matatiki Library. Below are the results of the artwork competition.

All entries are now on display at The Hub Hornby until 17th December - we’d love for you to check them out! Keep an eye out as some of these amazing designs may feature at Wycola Skate Park once upgrades are complete.

  • Wycola Skate Park, home to one of the first skate bowls built in Ōtautahi Christchurch, has a long history of use. However, it's now due for a much-needed upgrade.
  • In 2023, Council ran a community consultation to gather residents' views on Wycola Park and a future skate park. This year, Council ran several community workshops to engage local residents and young people.
  • Residents and young people were excited about the planned upgrades and the prospect of Wycola Park becoming a safer and more welcoming place to play and socialise.
  • CONVIC is a world leading skate park designer and our consultant for this project. They have developed the concept plans for Wycola Skate Park using all previously collected feedback. The plans include seating areas and a hamster wheel.
  • To celebrate this, we launched the ‘Design the Wheel’ Art Competition, which attracted 90 fantastic entries from local students.
