Plan for your pets this Guy Fawkes

4 November 2025

It’s time for pet owners to think about their animals’ welfare as people prepare to celebrate Guy Fawkes.

Animals have sensitive hearing and are easily spooked by the loud noises and bright flashes created by fireworks being let off on and around 5 November.

Animal Services Manager Lionel Bridger says the Council’s animal management team loves to reunite pet owners with their animals, however there are steps people can take to stop pets escaping during firework season.

“It’s a tough time for pets but owners can help them cope better during this time. It’s a good idea to keep your pets inside or confined in a safe space at night around the Guy Fawkes period, as well as keeping your doors, windows and curtains closed.

“This helps lessen the noise and minimise any flashing lights outside. Leaving the TV or radio on can also distract your pets from what’s going on outside, while creating a safe space for them to snuggle in and hide helps too,” says Mr Bridger.

He also recommended owners checking that their pets’ microchip, collar and ID tags are all up to date.

“Ensuring your pets’ details are correct will help us get them back home safely, particularly if they are dogs and are brought into our animal shelter.”

Animal owners should call the Council Contact Centre on 03 941 8999 or 0800 800 169 immediately if their pet goes missing. The Contact Centre is open 24/7 and is often able to match a dog to its owner straight away without them needing to stay at the shelter.
