The AF8 Roadshow: Bringing Earthquake Science to the Community

3 April 2025

Ōtautahi-Christchurch is set to host the 2025 AF8 Public Science Talks, an initiative designed to inform and engage communities about the risks posed by an Alpine Fault magnitude 8+ earthquake. With three public talks scheduled across different parts of the city, the AF8 Roadshow will foster discussions that empower locals to prepare for and respond to future seismic events.

Three Public Talks, Three Unique Locations

To ensure accessibility and relevance to Christchurch’s diverse communities, the AF8 Public Science Talks will take place in three locations, each chosen for its ability to meet the needs of its attendees:

  • Christchurch WestMonday, 12 May, 7:00 PM | Te Hāpua Mohoao Hall
This venue, with a capacity of up to 300 attendees, will accommodate a broad audience with varying levels of understanding of the Alpine Fault risk. The session aims to deliver scientific insights in an engaging and accessible manner.
  • Christchurch CentralTuesday, 20 May, 6:00 PM | Multicultural Recreation and Community Centre
Fostering inclusivity, this central city location provides a welcoming space for people from different backgrounds to come together and learn about earthquake preparedness.
  • Christchurch EastWednesday, 21 May, 6:30 PM | New Brighton South Surf Club
Recognising the specific challenges faced by the eastern suburbs in emergencies, this more intimate venue encourages direct community engagement and meaningful discussions about resilience.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for our communities to be involved in learning more about an event that could impact on them. The Roadshow really makes science accessible.”– Emergency Management Officer, Marlborough

Whether it’s identifying local resources, forming emergency plans, or simply starting discussions within families and workplaces, the Roadshow plays a crucial role in promoting preparedness.

Held biennially, the AF8 Roadshow also includes school visits and collaborations with emergency management groups across the South Island. The initiative is a testament to the strong partnership between scientists, emergency responders, and communication specialists, ensuring that the knowledge gained from research translates into actionable steps for the community.
