Last chance to enter the 2026 Edible and Sustainable Garden Awards

7 January 2026

Garden Awards

There is just under a week left for local gardeners to get their nominations in for the 2026 Waitai Coastal–Burwood–Linwood Edible and Sustainable Garden Awards, with entries closing on Monday 12 January 2026.

Whether you are growing herbs in pots, tending a backyard veggie patch, or nurturing a larger community or school garden, this is your chance to have your efforts recognised and celebrated. Entry is free and open to individuals, groups, organisations, schools, early learning centres and businesses located within the Waitai Coastal–Burwood–Linwood Community Board area.

All types of edible and sustainable gardens are welcome. You can enter online or download an entry form here

After entries close, members of the Canterbury Horticultural Society will visit gardens early next year. These friendly visits are designed to be supportive and informative, offering advice and feedback on a wide range of aspects, including:

  • Plant variety, quality and health.
  • General presentation.
  • Management of weeds.
  • Innovative features.
  • Water saving techniques.
  • Use of beneficials – flowers, herbs, companion planting.
  • Organic aspects – conversion of waste, etc.
  • Crop rotation and planning – sustainability.

Entrants are also encouraged to share photos of their gardening journey, from planting through to harvesting. With permission, these images may be used to celebrate local gardeners’ achievements and for promotional purposes related to the awards.

The Edible and Sustainable Garden Awards are a great way to showcase the passion, creativity and care that local people put into growing food sustainably, while also picking up new ideas and inspiration for the future.
