Sky-high fun set to make smiles at Kite Day

Kite Day

New Brighton Beach will be the place to be on Saturday 24 January from 12-4pm as Kite Day takes flight.

Thousands flock to the beachside suburb for the annual Kite Day event, with first-timers and seasoned pros alike taking to the skies with their colourful creations.

Events and Arts Manager at Christchurch City Council Lucy Blackmore says it always brings a buzz of excitement to New Brighton.

“Kite Day is the ultimate family-friendly beach day out! There’s so much space to spread out and give it a go, whatever your level of kite-flying experience.

“It’s just as much fun for spectators as for participants but if you don’t have a kite and want to try, there will be a pop-up kite shop there on the day.

“It’s the perfect opportunity for swimming, picnicking and sandcastle building as well, so round up your kites, your friends and your family and head to the beach! We’re hoping for a cracker summer’s day in Ōtautahi so remember to be SunSmart – slip, slop, slap and wrap.

“The event hub will be at the car park just south of the New Brighton Pier and the adjacent beach and we’ll have an ice cream vendor stationed here for a refreshing, summer treat. There’s also plenty of local eateries and shops to enjoy in New Brighton.

“Kite Day is a free event suitable for all ages, but please leave your four-legged friends at home,” says Ms Blackmore.

“Don’t miss this family-friendly day of summer fun – we’ll see you at the beach!”
