Update
Construction has been delayed due to the low structural integrity of the road. The line marking removal process can be tough on the road surface and surveys found that some areas of the intersection surface wouldn’t withstand the removal without significant damage. This means repairs are required to specific areas to enhance the durability of the surface and underlying pavement. These repairs are beyond the original project budget and need to be scheduled under a separate budget - the road resurfacing maintenance programme. Once this has been scheduled, the safety improvements project and road strengthening will occur at the same time.
We have a plan to enhance the visibility and safety of the Woodham Road and Gloucester Street intersection for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.
We’re planning to:
- Repaint all intersection approach roads to make it clear where straight travelling and turning traffic should be. The plan includes right-turn-only lanes on all approach roads, and one left-turn-only lane on the northern approach road. This will improve safety and efficiency for vehicles and cyclists getting through the intersection.
- Install painted right-turn bays within the intersection to assist drivers when turning right from Gloucester Street onto Woodham Road.
- Install painted cycle lanes on all entrances to the intersection to improve safety for cyclists.
- Introduce more no-parking restrictions at the intersections to provide space for the proposed lane marking changes. These will be outside 705, 713 and 715 Gloucester Street and 195 Woodham Road.
- Introduce P30 on the car park spaces outside 164 Woodham Road to help with the turnover of cars wanting to go into nearby businesses.
