Improvements coming for Wyon and Hulbert Street

Wyon and Hulbert Street is in need of a refresh. We know that the road surfacing isn’t great in places and that the deep-dish guttering is a hazard for people.

Earlier this year, we gathered feedback on Wyon and Hulbert Street to understand what needed fixing. We received a range of requests:

  • More street trees
  • Improved street lighting
  • New and wider footpaths
  • Improved speed management to maintain the 30km speed limit
  • New kerb and channel
  • Narrowed road width
  • Road resurfacing

We’ve used this feedback to develop two options with different road and berm widths, one with a 9-metre road width and slightly larger berms and one with a 6-metre road width, much larger berms and indented parking.

Both options will include a road, kerb and channel, footpath and street light renewal.

We’re also raising the Wyon / Hulbert intersection to protect Britten’s Drain — a 90 year old culvert which runs under Wyon Street.

Option 1

9-metre width

This option will widen the grass berm and install speed humps at the Wyon / Hulbert intersection and at both entrances to Wyon Street to manage speeding vehicles.

Yellow no-stopping lines will be painted at the Wyon / Hulbert intersection as well as the Hulbert Street cul-de-sac to make sure cars can turn safely. These yellow lines will remove approximately 14 car parks around the intersection.

Option 2

6-metre width

Similar to option 1, this option will widen the grass berm, install speed humps and paint yellow no-stopping lines. These yellow lines will remove approximately 14 car parks around the Wyon / Hulbert intersection.

Because of the narrowed road width, some parking will be indented into the berm so it’s off the main road. Cars will still be able to park on both sides of the road. Where there are cars parked on both sides of the road, there will only be space for one direction of traffic.

A narrower road width will encourage slower speeds.
