We're proposing to change the speed limit

The pedestrian section of Brighton Mall is currently 30km/h. We're proposing to lower it to 10km/h.

The mall’s main purpose is to act as a gateway between the pier, the beach and local businesses to give people in New Brighton easy access to hospitality, retail and services. The mall needs to be accessible, safe and welcoming for locals and visitors so we’re looking at a range of changes.
  • The gift of a new name

We have been gifted a Te Reo Māori name for the space: Te Ara Kuaka, meaning “the pathway of the godwit.” This name honours the godwit, a significant taonga species in the New Brighton area, and symbolises movements and connection.

It will be featured alongside the official name, Brighton Mall, on signage and included in the cultural design in the central gathering area.

Fly through of the Brighton Mall upgrades

We're giving the mall in New Brighton a long-awaited upgrade

New Brighton has been regenerating steadily over the past decade. Since Christchurch City Council adopted the New Brighton Master Plan in 2015, we’ve seen projects like He Puna Taimoana, the City to Sea Pathway, Marine Parade, New Brighton Beachside Playground and New Brighton Surf Lifesaving Club all contribute to the growth of the area.

Alongside these projects, and with the new Village Green Project and the Pierside development all underway, it’s now the ideal time to renew Brighton Mall itself. We’ve used feedback from key stakeholders and from previous consultation to guide our design – we’ve heard that improving the feel, safety and connectivity would be the best way to help draw people to visit and spend time in the area.

We’re working closely with the Greater New Brighton Charitable Trust, Martini Investments and ChristchurchNZ to make sure private and public developments integrate well.

We estimate renewing the mall will cost $4.2 million, this includes a range of underground works. This budget has been allocated in the Long Term Plan 2024 - 2034.
