Consultation open
Somerset Reserve
NZTA has asked to purchase part of Somerset Reserve from Council to support the Brougham Street upgrade. Purchasing part of the reserve will allow space for the two-way shared path, which will provide a safe off-road option for cyclists and pedestrians.
We know that Somerset Reserve is an important space for the local community and has recently been upgraded. If the sale is approved, the toilet block and seating will remain. However, some landscaping, including four trees will need to be removed. NZTA will introduce new planting along the shared path and the trees will be required to be replaced two to one in the local area, in line with our Tree Policy.
NZTA led their own consultation on the Brougham Street improvements from November 2021-January 2022. Feedback showed that there is a high demand for a right turn into Selwyn Street so the design was changed to include this. Due to the design change, NZTA has asked to buy a section of Somerset Reserve to allow for the wider intersection.
A Section 50 land transfer, under the Public Works Act 1981 allows the transfer of land between the Crown and local authorities for the use of public works, such as the Brougham Street improvements.
If the sale of land is approved by Council, NZTA will pay compensation inline with market value.

Antigua Reserve
NZTA has asked to purchase part of Antigua Reserve from Council to support the Brougham Street upgrade. Purchasing part of the reserve will allow space for the footpath and provide enough space for pedestrians to wait to cross the road.
If the sale is approved some tussocks will need to be removed but all trees will remain.
