Closed for feedback

Consultation on North Beach car park has now closed. People were able to provide feedback from 5 to 17 August 2025. You will be able to read their feedback and the staff recommendation once an agenda is available for the Waitai Coastal-Burwood-Linwood Community Board meeting, which will be in early September.

North New Brighton is home to one of Ōtautahi Christchurch's most-popular beaches. It's a great spot to surf, walk, play in the sand, or come together for an event at the North New Brighton Community Centre. However, we understand that there are problems with North Beach car park.

It's often hard to find a parking space and having to navigate the full car park, or park on the other side of Marine Parade, can be a safety issue. We've heard from the community that these problems are made worse by a large number of people freedom camping overnight in the car park.

To make the car park more usable, we're proposing some minor improvements. We've spoken to groups that use the car park most to identify changes that can be made to improve the availability of parking spaces in time for summer. Tell us what you think about the changes below!

Over the next 2-3 years a number of projects around the North Beach car park will be undertaken by Council and other developers. These include:

  • Redevelopment of North Beach Surf Lifesaving Club (subject to Community Board approval - more information is available here)
  • Installation of a cycleway and traffic calming measures on Marine Parade to the south of North Beach car park
  • Completion of housing developments on nearby streets.

Once these projects are complete, we will assess whether further improvements to the car park are required.

Proposed changes

  • We're proposing to apply a three-hour time limit at all times to the North Beach car park.

We want to strike a balance between allowing people enough time to enjoy the beach and other facilities, while encouraging turnover to allow others to enjoy the area and ensuring that the restrictions can be enforced.

  • We're proposing to formally mark the parking spaces on the road next to the car park and apply a 10-minute time limit.

We want to provide some high-turnover, easy-access parking spaces for people quickly stopping by, whether to grab a coffee, check the surf, or drop off gear. Marking the spaces should also make it clearer where the car park entrance/exit points are.
